Join first and last names (CONCAT)
The payroll system imported first names into column A and last names into column B, but the email template needs one full-name field. In Full name, write a formula that joins A2 and B2 with a single space — C2 should read like Alice Wang. Start in C2, then fill down to C5.
Your solution should use cell references so it updates automatically when Test Case input values change.
Notes
You can glue text together two ways: the & operator (=A2&" "&B2) or the CONCAT function (=CONCAT(A2, " ", B2)). Both accept as many pieces as you need — remember that the space between names is a real string, " ", not something Excel adds for you. Google Sheets also supports CONCATENATE, which behaves the same way as CONCAT for this task.
FAQ
Should I use `&` or CONCAT?
Both produce identical results here. `&` is shorter and loved for quick joins; CONCAT reads more clearly in long formulas. Google Sheets additionally offers CONCATENATE and TEXTJOIN for more complex separators.
Why do I need `" "` between the names?
Excel joins exactly what you give it — `=A2&B2` produces `AliceWang` with no space. A literal space must be a quoted string: `=A2&" "&B2`.
Does CONCAT accept ranges?
Yes — CONCAT(A2:B2) joins the whole range left-to-right, though you lose control over separators. TEXTJOIN(" ", TRUE, A2:B2) joins a range AND inserts a separator between values.
Will the joined result update when names change?
Yes, as long as the formula references A2 and B2 instead of typed text. That is exactly what the test cases verify — switch inputs and C2 recomputes.
