Who has to approve this discount? (IF + AND)
The problem
Problem statement
Policy: a discount above 15% on a deal of at least 10,000 needs a manager. Anything else is fine for the rep. Row 2 is the one to judge — put "Manager" or "Rep" in the Approver cell D2.
Both conditions must hold at once; either one alone is not enough.
Problem data
Show the sheet as a table (selectable, copyable)
| A | B | C | D | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Deal | Amount | Discount | Approver |
| 2 | D-201 | 20000 | 0.2 | |
| 3 | D-202 | 15000 | 0.1 | |
| 4 | D-203 | 8000 | 0.18 | |
| 5 | D-204 | 10000 | 0.16 |
Notes
AND inside IF is the readable way to require two conditions; the alternative — multiplying the two comparisons — works because TRUE × TRUE is 1. The boundary matters: 15% exactly is not above 15%, and 10,000 exactly does meet the amount rule.
How to approach
Your answer goes in D2.
- Target cell is D2
- You need two comparisons joined by AND
- Check the discount first: C2 > 0.15
- Shape: =IF(AND(?, ?), "Manager", "Rep")

FAQ
How do I test two conditions in one IF?
=IF(AND(condition1, condition2), value_if_true, value_if_false). AND returns a single TRUE only when every condition holds.
Why did a 16% discount on 9,000 need an approval?
It should not — unless the amount comparison is > rather than <, or the two ranges point at the wrong columns. Check both halves separately before combining them.
