Count passing scores (COUNTIF)

Easy Logic

You just finished grading an exam for an adult-education class. The passing line is 60 points, and the grade report needs one number at the top: how many of the eight students in B2:B9 passed. Fill the Passed count cell D2.

Your solution should use cell references so it updates automatically when Test Case input values change.

Notes

COUNTIF takes a range and a criteria string. Comparison operators go inside the criteria text: ">=60". Writing 60 alone would count only exact 60s; "60" would be treated as equality too.

FAQ

How do I count cells greater than a value?

Use =COUNTIF(B2:B9, ">=60") — the operator and the threshold live together in one criteria string. Use ">60" if 60 itself should not count.

Does COUNTIF include the boundary value?

With ">=60", a score of exactly 60 is included. With ">60" it is excluded. Pick the operator that matches your rule.

Can the threshold be a cell reference?

Yes: =COUNTIF(B2:B9, ">=" & E1) builds the criteria from the number in E1, so you can tune the passing line without touching the formula.
